United States Air Force

If you’ve got a high school diploma or are about to earn one, a career is waiting for you in the Air Force. And it’s not all about planes and pilots. We’ve got a career for almost every interest and skill.

Start an Air Force Career that will last a lifetime!

Some Air Force Job Descriptions:

  • Pilots: No Air Force can operate without the various types of pilots – from fighter pilots to cargo plane pilots, and everything in-between!
  • Flight Nurses: Air Force Nurses do more than work in military hospitals and clinics. Some turn in their hospital whites for green flight suits. These are the Air Force Flight Nurses.
  • Ammo Troops: Bombs, bullets and explosives are hazardous to friend and foe alike but are handled with care by the men and women who work in Air Force Munitions Flights. Known as “ammo” troops, the airmen of the munitions flight handle all of the bombs, ammunition, defensive ordnance, explosives and bullets used by the Air Force.
  • International Affairs Specialist: Air Force officers can expect to gain international insight, foreign language proficiency and cultural understanding by becoming international affairs specialists. Under the old foreign area officer program, international skills were self-obtained. Within the program are two types of positions: regional affairs strategist, or RAS, and political-military affairs strategist, or PAS.
  • Space Operations: Space is still the Air Force’s new frontier. Less than 15 years ago, relying on spaced-based capabilities to direct battles on the ground was a relatively new capability for the U.S. military. Not even in their wildest dreams would most people think it would one day be possible for a pilot to sit in an air-conditioned room at some stateside base and fly a UAV over Afghanistan.

  • Nontraditional Fighter Missions: The convoy travels down the dusty desert road. Soldiers keep watchful eyes, surveying the barren landscape surrounding them. Today, their minds are slightly at ease. Overhead, an armed F-16 in direct contact with their team is watching the road ahead. No one will be lost today.
  • Air Field Managers: An airfield manager’s job encompasses almost anything that deals with the airfield. Their primary job is to ensure the safety of the airfield. They make sure that obstructions are not interfering with operations, clear zones around the runway and taxiways, and make sure there’s ample lighting to complete the mission. And that’s just the start…
  • Loadmasters: Air Force Loadmasters play a critical role in the C-130 Hercules mission. They accomplish preflight checks of aircraft, making sure all equipment is working. Then they supervise the loading of the aircraft, including cargo and passengers. Most importantly, they calculate the weight and balance of the cargo so the aircraft can safely fly.
And many more!

USAF: Fly, Fight, and Win

Everyone has heard about the great people of our nation. Not the founding fathers or any of the others of history, but the current heroes of today. There is the Army, the Navy and the Marines, but also among them is the United States Air Force, which is the aerial and space warfare branch of the United States armed forces. Before September 18, 1947, they were a part of the Army, but branched out separately after the National Security Act of 1947.

The Air Force's official mission is "to fly, fight, and win... in air, space and cyberspace." In order to keep achieving this goal, they must keep up with the development of Airmen, technological warfare and integrating operations. This helps the Air Force maintain air and space superiority, which ensures the enemy, cannot make a sneak attack on land, sea, air or space. The advanced technological warfare allows the quick, precise attack if it should ever become necessary, with time not adding to the list of enemies. The ability to react and respond quickly in any given situation maintains rapid global mobility.

The Air Force is also superior in obtaining information that is necessary to create plans based on a given situation with, as previous mentioned, absolute precision in all of their activities.

The leaders of the Force generally enforce and maintain three core values meant to inspire Airmen to do only their best and to improve upon their best. The Airmen are to learn these values, which tie them to history's greatest warriors and public servants, to live by these standards and to cherish them.

First and foremost, Airmen are taught "Integrity First." This means doing what is right when nobody is around to see it, maintaining the ability to compose oneself and acting on conviction. It means practicing honesty, responsibility, accountability, justice, openness, self-respect and humility. To summarize, an Airmen with integrity can grasp the concept of defending the Constitution and is sobered by the act.

Secondly, Airmen are taught "Service Before Self." They are taught to act selflessly and follow professional procedure before satisfying personal desires. In the most minimal scenario, this would include following all of the given rules, maintaining and composing respect for others and exercising discipline and self-control. In particular, Airmen must maintain control of certain aspects of their life, such as anger, appetites and religious tolerance.

Lastly, "Excellence in All We Do." The United States Air Force expects only excellence from their Airmen. This extends to personal excellence by maintaining physical and mental health as well as completing military education. Community excellence is highly desired as well, which extends to giving people the benefit of the doubt and offering genuine respect for the people of the nation.

What is the United States Air Force?

The United States Air Force (USAF) is a branch of the United States of America's military that deals with air and space defense. The Air Force was created in 1907. It was created under the United States Army. It went through a series of name changes and on September 18, 1947 the United States Air Force separated from the United States Army and became their own entity. Since that point the USAF has come to gain over 316,000 enlisted personnel and has become renowned as one of the world's most formidable armed forces on the planet, and has gained some of the most advanced weaponry available in the world today.

The United States Air Force has been involved in many conflicts including World War I all the way through Operation Iraqi Freedom. However, the Air Force has been involved in numerous humanitarian operations including operations during World War II and continues to operate humanitarian missions to this day. The Air Force has always stood for Valor, Strength, and Honor. They continue to focus their efforts on taking care of people around the world that are in need. They do this through food drops, airlifting, and generally helping people in all nations.

The Air Force has over 302 air squadrons including squadrons in active duty, the Air Force Reserve, and the Air National Guard. A rigorous training program has achieved this in order to produce the most ready soldiers available. The Air Force Fitness Test, or AFFT, is designed to test a soldier's ability to perform under rigorous physical strain. In 2004 the Air Force began a much more stringent physical test with much more rigorous requirements. Pilots must earn at least a score of 75 out of 100 possible points. These points are scored based on waist circumference, crunches, push-ups, and a 1.5km run.

The United States Air Force has, and always will, continue to be looked upon with respect for the way their missions are conducted quickly and efficiently. Their efforts will forever be imprinted on the hearts of Americans everywhere. Their service for The United States of America will never be forgotten.
